Hence when you plan for a tiger safari you plan for a trip to India. This trip will certainly include many other aspects other than wildlife watching. India is a diverse country and beautiful so it is worth exploring all aspects of the country.

You can begin by exploring Indian destinations and tiger reserves on Internet since there is enough information in this regard. Another option for organizing and tiger safari and sightseeing trip to India is to look for tour operator packages to India which have destination you wish for in the itinerary. Many of these tours are customizable or can be tailor made according to your choice. Variation in a package tour will cost less if you add nearby destinations. Major changes in the itinerary will cost very high.

The best places to see tigers in the wild are Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench tiger reserves so see that these reserves are included in the package other interesting wildlife destinations are Ranthambhore and Corbett. If you are interested in package tour to Kerala then Periyar is an interesting tiger reserve to see bison, wild dogs and wild elephants.

Check list of hotels in Kanha National Park, Pench, Bandhavgarh and other reserves and find out about accommodation mention in the packages. Are they right for you or do you prefer another hotel. Check out the best seasons to visit these parks for tiger sighting, animal watching and birding. You need minimum three nights to see the tiger and broad spectrum of wildlife in the parks. Does your package offer three nights stay? Check the season does it suit? Summers in India are very hot and winters very cold. You need warm clothing for winters in India.

Chalk out your food preferences and inform the tour operator for Indian food can be hot and spicy. You need wildlife books, binoculars and a nature guide for holistic experience in the park does the hotels provide that? Of course you should carry your own binocs.

The country has more than three hundred mammalian species, 2600 species of birds including sub species and amazing variety of reptiles and insects including butterflies.
This phenomenal wildlife is due to different zoo geographical zones diverse terrain - elevated and plain, distinct flora and fauna elements that thrive in desert, scrub, riverine, grassland and forested ecosystems.

The main zoo geographical zones that have distinct habitats and flora and fauna are the Himalayas, Thar desert, Western and Eastern Ghats, Central Indian highlands, Gangetic plains and Deccan plateau or Indian Peninsula. Western Gujarat which has Gir National Park famous for lion safari and Arunachal Pradesh with Indo Chinese sub flora and fauna in true tropical forests of the North East Indian states.

The best way to see Indian wildlife is to go on a wildlife safari at National Parks situated in various parts of India with major animals and birds peculiar to those regions. The National Parks offer well organized tourism infrastructure for wildlife safaris in India.

One must first choose the keystone species that one has a desire to see and them go for a safari there. For those interested in birding tour Bharatpur is the best place. For tigers Bandhavgarh and Kanha preserves in Central India. For Rhino, Kaziranga is the ideal safari park while Corbett and Periyar are the best place to see wild elephants in India.

There are many other interesting birds and animals to be seen in India but one must first find out about them. The potential of wildlife safaris in India is limitless and thousands of tourists from India and abroad visit wildlife heavens. There are many states which have yet to highlight wildlife that there is. There is a concerted effort that is required to highlight Indian wildlife so that more and more people from all over the World come to see it. Not only tigers but all wildlife and natural places offer immense scope for eco tourism.

It is where Mowgli the Wolf child was discovered by Lt. Moor which inspired Rudyard Kipling to write the "Jungle Book".

The mixed dry deciduous forests of Pench are ideal habitat for Central Indian wildlife including tigers. Hence Pench is the most suitable for trekking tigers in a tiger safari while on India tour to Madhya Pradesh.

The flora is as interesting and diverse as the animal life is and tree lovers are in for a treat at Pench tiger reserve in India. Among the popular faunal elements are the Palas, Salai, Saaj and Bamboo. Indian ghost tree or Kulu is an enchanting site which I like the most.

The wildlife sightings top with spotted deer, sambar and Indian bison or gaur among the heaviest I have seen ever. The leopard is elusive and the wolf and hyena are seen by chance. The sloth bear is often seen near Mahua trees.

Nagur is the nearest airport about 80 km drive and Jabalpur is a rail head as well as airport connected to Delhi. Jabalpur is approx 200 km drive to Pench.

Pench has perhaps the best birdlife in Central India though a checklist has not been made so far.

It is rare these days not to be able to see a tiger in three nights stay.

Well unfortunate can happen as animal behavior cannot be predicted things could be made worse by heavy tourist influx and may be road side fires to clear the pathways and prevent spread of forest fire if it takes place.

The hotel at Kanha where I was staying during my last visit was a treat what with luxurious rooms and banquets. My guests were very pleased with the hospitality and the ambiance. Anyway they could see the tiger and click lot of images as well so that made them more happy and my pocket a little warmer.

It was raining when I left, the rains augur the closer of the park and hence no tiger safari in the monsoon as the jungle roads are not motor able. It is a said feeling that one will not be able to see the big cats till start of the season in October.

But anyway Kanha holds lots of surprises with may be new tigers to see. Reading behavior traits and admiring physicality of the animal makes every tiger sighting a first sighting ...well almost.

  Comments

Tiger Safari - Off Season

The tiger safari in Indian tiger reserves has come to the end of the season. The parks close on 30th June every year and will open on 16th October this year. This is a monsoon break as the roads are not motor able and the wildlife gets some respite from the tourist pressure.

This is also a fragile period for the wild animals. This is due to the absence of tourists and difficulty in traversing many areas of the park. Taking advantage of these conditions poachers increase their nefarious activities and go after the endangered wildlife. Hence tiger tourism does help in conservation of wildlife and the park.

In tiger reserves such as Kanha National Park increased vigil is kept and the whole staff and the elephant brigades are utilized to patrol the park. But Kanha is very large and difficult to safe guard.

Same problem is faced by the Bandhavgarh National Park in the Vindhya Ranges. The populations of ex hunters, some of whom are said to get political patronage are a greater menace to the safety of the tigers and other wild animals in the the park.

Pench National Park also becomes vulnerable in the rains although the security measures are as tight as that in Kanha and Bandhavgarh tiger reserves.

The images are taken from a digital movie camera and then cropped. The Indian tiger reserves are the best places for wildlife sighting and for tiger photography.

For good images you need good SLR with a lens of at least 300 mm. A prime lens gives better images hence most of the wildlife photographers use prime lenses although sometimes zoom lenses are quite handy.

The best time or nature photography at tiger reserves is the hot month of May which accords lot of sunlight and wonderful tiger and animal sightings.

For birding long lenses are a must with a prime lens of 800 mm or with a digital camera 500 mm. Most economical lenses are from Sigma which equal in quality to major brands as Nikon, Pentax and Canon.

The state is uniquely tribal with rich deposits of mineral ores. The state is also rich in flora and fauna and holds number of wildlife sanctuary and a National Park.

Though the park does not have a National Park like Kanha in MP, but there are number of places that are excellent for wildlife viewing and birding. More popular though a lesser known destination is Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary which is about 85 kilometers from Raipur, an industrial town and an airport. Like the Achanakmar sanctuary, Barnawapara is rich in wildlife and is worth visiting to see the majestic tiger and other major mammals. There are number of resorts at Barnawapara to have a comfortable stay.

To reach the sanctuary there are rail, air and bus connections available to Raipur from which one can drive to Barnawapara in Mahasamund district. Best time for wildlife viewing is from the month of November to the hot months of May and June.

The animals, birds and flora are unique in distant regions of India.

Visiting tiger reserves on wildlife safaris in distant states will definitely offer many new experiences for the eco tourist.

Kerala is one of the prime wildlife destinations in India. During your Kerala tour you can visit Periyar tiger reserve and many others.

Periyar offers extensive wildlife viewing and major mammals like wild elephant, tiger and Indian bison. Though tiger sightings are not as high as Kanha or Bandhavhgarh the wildlife experience in totality is something not to be missed.

Periyar also referred to as Thekkady is spread in an area of 777 sq.kms and is one of the finest tiger reserve in India. At Periyar one can go for nature walk, border hiking, adventure trekking and bamboo rafting apart from wildlife safari in the park. Most of these nature programs are organized by the administration and are conservation oriented.

Periyar nature preserve is situted in Idukki district of Kerala and can be reached:
The tiger reserve in Central India close on 31st June till October 1st.

The hotels at Kanha still receive visitors from India. The visitors from UK, USA and other European countries who form the bulk of foreign visitors do not visit now. The reason is that after mid April the heat starts to rise and it becomes unbearable. Only those who are interested in tiger photography dare to bear the heat. This is wonderful time for wildlife watching since animals congregate in the core zone as water elsewhere dries down.

Unlike Kanha the hotels at Pench do not close down after the closure of the park as the fun crowd from nearby town Nagpur keep on visiting the resort. They limit themselves to the surrounding or are holed up in the hotel drinking and dancing.

This is the time for wildlife and tiger photography as there is good light and the forest cover is reduced. Moreover the animal activity heightens in the core zone which aids the photographer in locating major mammals - tiger, leopard, sambar deer and even sloth bears easily.

Most of the action in the parks around this time is at waterholes and grasslands providing excellent scope for capturing animals in your camera.

The hotels in Kanha offer rates which are suitable for the economy class and the luxury traveler as well.

There are three star resorts and lodges which offer luxurious amenities and varied cuisine. Though the economy hotels in Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Pench charge lower rates they are by no mens lacking in facilties.

Most of the resorts are well maintained jungle lodges amongst green and verdant forest tracts which deliver suitable surroundings. The service is good and ambience is adequate. To an economy ecotourist luxury matters little for he seeks comfort, cleanliness and good food which the budget resorts and lodges offer here.

The hotels in Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench National Parks can be booked online or booked through a land based travel agent in India.

The popular packages offered by these jungle resorts are :

Jungle Plan: JP includes lodging and boarding and also the park safari.

American Plan:AP incudes lodging and boarding but excludes jungle safari.

Some lodges charge on room only basis.

It is upto the ecotourists to go for the accommodation that suits them the best.

When forest ecosystems are healthy, habitats support diversity and availability of food and water is everywhere hence tigers need smaller territories to survive. They need not carve a large area for themselves. Thus conflicts between dominant tigers is avoided and the jungle can support more tigers. Kanha supports all forms of life that find habitation suitable in its environment.

This is the prime reason why tiger safaris and photography tours offer such wonderful tiger sightings. On a good day one can see two to three different tigers but sometimes the jungle goes to sleep and sightings can be poor. It is therefore advisable that the tiger tour should be of at least four nights.

Hiring a good naturalist helps since he is able to help track tigers and other wildlife. A nature guide elaborates on whatever is of interest in the forests during the park safari. Good photographic equipment, a pair of birding binoculars and books on Indian wildlife and Indian birds are a must.

Me and my tourist friends where able to spot six tigers in two days. It was simply amazing, I had never had such good tiger sightings ever. Though I have often seen four to five tigers in one trip but never had a tiger safari like this. WOW!

After the tourist rush is over by January 2nd week. It is tiger time at Kanha since there is less disturbance and water holes elsewhere start to dry up. Good times then begin with lots of wildlife at your doorstep. Although to be quite honest there can be dry days without much sightings. That is Indian jungle life for you...the element of surprise...

It was a fantastic trip for my guests from UK who did lot of tiger photography as well. They got some exciting photos of the tigers in the wild.

We were lucky enough to sight another secondary carnivore..the wild dog or dhole as the animal is known in India. We could not see the whole pack but could spot three of them two being the Alpha pair perhaps.

Plus we came across the rare endangered Hard Ground Barasingha or Swamp Deer (cervus duavcelli branderi)and Asia's largest deer Sambar (cervus unicolor) the ubiquitous chital or spotted deer (axix axis)which is the main prey base of tertiary carnivores like the leopard and the bengal tiger in Indian jungles.

  Comments

Tigers in trouble

Kanha Tiger Reserve is the most popular National Park for tiger safari in India. Kanha harbors amazing biodiversity and offers best sightings mammals, birds and reptiles not forgetting the winged wonders butterflies marvel of Indian wildlife. This gem of a paradise is facing trouble in recent time from heavy influx of tiger tourism which thankfully has been curbed to adequate levels by the action of park authorities. In short gate fees have been hiked and number of vehicles entering for game safari has been restricted.

But the recent discovery of snares in various areas of the park has created a panic among the management. This has never happened before. It is unofficially reported that the number of snare is as much as seventeen.

The latest buzz going on is that one large male tiger "Kunda" was trapped in the snare and rescued but with a paw injured. He recently succumbed in a a territorial fight with another male tiger.

The report though unofficial is substantiated by the news paper reports of a large gang of poachers entering Central India. Kanha would be the most obivious target and not much guess is required. Along with Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench tiger reserves are also the target since they harbor large tiger populations as per statistics.

There are some tribes which are professional hunters and notorious among them is the "Bel Pardhi" tribe which have become the scourge of wildlife management in India. To make matters worse notorious poacher and smuggle "Darra" is at large after being granted bail from the court in Madhya Pradesh.

If anti poaching activity is lax than it augurs bad for the tigers in India. Contact me for more information.Uday Patel

The best places to see tiger are in Central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh at Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench tiger reserves. The other place you can expect to see tiger is the Ranthambhore National Park and Corbett but the first three offer the best tiger sighting in India.

These sanctuaries also offer the finest birding to a bird watcher interested in Indian birds. They harbor around 250 plus bird species with Corbett leading with around five hundred plus Indian bird species including winter migrants.

Bandhavgarh is the most enchanting tiger heaven on earth with unique charismatic landscape and historical ruins, ancient caves and monuments as fort, dungeons and exotic temples and zoomorphic statues of Lord Vishnu. It harbors the maximum number of tigers in a given area in whole of India.

Kanha is renowned world famous national park where zoologists like George Schaller conducted successful study that was instrumental in saving the Bengal tiger and the Hard ground barasingha or the swamp deer (Cervus duavcelli branderi).
Pench tiger reserve is the Mowgli land where Mowgli the wolf child was discovered and made famous eventually by Rudyard Kipling in his “Jungle Book”. The Pench river intersects through the forest in turn sheltering amazing biodiversity and wildlife in its folds. The forests are dry deciduous types and are famous for birds as well as the tiger.

But the most amzing conglomeration of wildlife and ancient history is Bandhavgarh tiger reserve where the tiger survives among the ruins of hundreds of monuments - forts, temples, caves and sacred idols.

The tiger rules supreme for the kings, queens and their consorts have gone. Only the ruins acts as scribes that tell of Kulturi and the Baghelas, who once ruined this little paradise. On your India travel and tiger tour you must visit Bandhgvarh it is natures most wonderful preserve that enthralls thousands of travellers every year.

Bird watching in India is exciting with so many bird species including winter migrants to watch. The bengal white tiger once roamed the nearby forests of Bandhavgarh. the exciting prospects to see the white tiger still lingers.

Contact a naturalist list like me for tiger tour trip information and perhaps to accomapany to make your tiger sightings far exciting and adventurous.

I can assist well due to my experience. Both the Indian tiger reserves are best visited in between November and March. March is best as the grass and vegetation dries out a bit and animals congregrate near water holes and partially dry river beds. This offers best opportunity for tiger photography and photo graphing wildlife on Indian national parks. A good time for bird photography as well since foilage decreases with the onset of summer and birds congregate near remaining water sources. The best benefit is always the increased sunlight.

The most common animals seen are spotted deer, sambhar and monkey and wild boars. Hard Ground Barasingha is found only at Kanha and can be seen post winters when they arrive at Kanha Meadow and surroundings. Leopard sighting needs lot of luck although they are spread near the periphery. Their main conflict is with the bengal tiger and a shrewd spacing mechanism keeps them away from the tigers paw.

This is because the landing point in India is usually Delhi for in bound tourists. Delhi offer great historical monuments to see.

There is a direct flight from here to Jabalpur and Kanha is approx 165 km away by road. The iterinary may include Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve as well since both tiger reaserves offer the best chance to see the tiger. In fact none can beat them in terms of tiger sightings. A three to four night stay in Jungle will offer a chance to see a tiger. Very very few go disappointed.

Other animals like Sambhar (cervus unicolor) Spotted Deer (axis axis) Hard Ground Barasingha (cervus duavcelli branderi) are a treat to watch. The latter being present only at Kanha.

Both the national parks offer very good bird watching and hence are good birding destinations.
